Making premature decisions when learning in early development often sets up a team for failure in the execution phases.

Innovation teams in both start-ups and established companies face pressure to make decisions quickly. Investor expectations and innovation processes encourage teams to be decisive, in the false belief that making decisions represents progress.

While there are some decisions that should be taken early in order to get them out of the way, other decisions need more attention — the high impact / high uncertainty decisions that will ultimately drive the program’s success.
 
When teams make these decisions too early, they have to go back and revisit the decisions later, when these choices are more difficult to change. That leads directly to cost overruns, product compromises and especially program delays.
 
All this rushed decision-making can make the program seem like it’s moving fast, but it’s really setting up the team for slow innovation execution.
 

As innovators, we’re required to make major decisions early without much data.

Our innovation and product development processes require us to make decisions early. We need those decisions in order to get approval to proceed, whether that’s a slot in our company’s product roadmap or venture capital funding. Then those decisions are not validated until much later, sometimes right before or after the product launches.

When some of these decisions prove to be unworkable, they trigger late design changes and costly rework. They send teams backwards in the development process to redo work from earlier phases of development. The time from the original decision to the revisited decision is one long, slow learning cycle.
